This view of a great egret was the highlight of my trip to Rutland Water today.
About the size of a grey heron, the great egret is approximately twice the size of the more common little egret. It has an orange/yellow bill unlike the black one of its smaller cousin.
Among the other good spots of the day (red kite, snipe, godwit, hobby, stonechat, muntjac deer ….) I was pleased to get this close-up of a marsh tit.
What a majestic looking bird the Great Egret is. Great spot.

It’s not the first time I have seen this bird (also at Rutland Water) but this is by far the best view. I like the long neck in particular. It was drawn to my attention by another observer in the hide.
