I was pleased to see my first great crested grebe chicks of the year today and another mute swan family. In the reeds I managed a reasonable shot of a whitethroat (unmistakable with its ‘white throat’) and a pied wagtail gathering a mouthful of flies, presumably for its brood. A grey heron made a pleasing picture (one for the calendar!) and a fox poked its nose out of a reed bed visible from the Kingfisher Hide. Finally two waders – an oyster catcher and a green sandpiper. There were more oyster catchers around that I have ever seen before on the reserve, including one enjoying the sprinkler on the village cricket pitch and the green sandpiper was perilously close to the fox.
