Calendar Bird of the Month – Goldcrest

Along with the similar but much rarer firecrest the goldcrest is the UK’s smallest bird.

These are some of the pictures I have taken over the last few years. The first image is from Wollaton Park and the second in a reed bed at Attenborough Nature Reserve. They often forage in my neighbour’s conifers (images 3 & 4) but I was able to tempt at least one to visit the feeding station enabling some close-up shots.

Finally a couple of bonus items. On a visit to ANR two days ago I was pleased to get a reasonable shot of a tern in mid air and dropping into the reserve this morning for a quick coffee after church a robin hopped unbidden onto our table. I managed to find a few sunflower hearts in my pocket so it was not disappointed.
