Sparrowhawk in the Garden

This morning (19/11) I observed a lot of small birds, mostly goldfinches, taking advantage of the feeders on the apple tree. A sparrowhawk also spied the feeding flock and had a couple of goes at snatching himself a meal – without success. On the second attempt I managed a somewhat obscured photo as it perched for a moment on the apple tree. The pink breast feathers and blue grey wings indicate that this is a male. For comparison I have included a picture of a female sparrowhawk that managed to snatch a starling in the garden earlier in the year. The colour difference is clear.
